Moving music is hard to come by at times. You mostly stumble upon those spine-tingling, soul wrenching anthems by accident, whether it’s a Spotify playlist or and accidental YouTube find.
This time, we can bring it directly to you. Yvonne Hercules sings in a way that will make your hairs stand on end, particularly when she is singing songs inspired by police brutality against BME communities.
Her single ‘Roving’ features lyrics such as “don’t you know what’s here is yours?”, “you fall down, the shots ring out”, the song subtlety delivers a message of persistent subjugation and standing together in the face of it. But what makes it particularly special is the delivery.
With a simplistic arrangement, the track is rich in its sparseness. Guitar melodies are the track’s driving force, complimenting the vocal rather than over-powering it. Yvonne’s blues, alternative and folk inspirations enable her to stand out in a time in which music has moved away from live bands and beauty in simplicity. Overproduction is the order of the day, but Yvonne can stand out with her effortless talent, on display when we filmed the live session.
Yvonne strives for perfection, notable in her desire to hit every note with each take. Though the first take sounded perfect to us, Yvonne wanted to make sure it was a tip top performance. That resulted in a stunning cover of Bon Iver’s ‘Flume’.
Check it out for yourself and make sure you keep an eye out for the ‘Rover’ live session.
